Another project that I just started this morning, that I want to share with you, is something that I'm doing for my mom for Mother's Day- and yes you still have time to make these...they are easy and quick.
Mom needs some new coasters- really, she does-she told me. I have seen some pretty awesome handmade coasters all over the blogs and on Etsy.
Here's how you make them:
Just A Few Supplies:
4x4 Tumbled Stone Tiles- you can buy them individually so get however many you want to make.
Mod Podge
Tissue Paper- *see note below
*Basically this is a decoupage project so you can (1) Buy printed tissue paper with a design that you like or (2) Using your printer, print a picture of your choosing onto the tissue paper. I'll show you how to do both.
Her are some tissue papers that I'm using. I purchased them at our local Hobby Lobby.
Here's the picture of my mom holding me that I want to use.
To print a photo onto tissue paper:
1. Cut a piece of tissue paper a bit smaller than your printer paper.
2. Tape the tissue paper to the printer paper using basic transparent tape. Make sure all of the edges are taped down.
3. Load it into your printer and print.
Here it is printed on the tissue paper and here is the point where I scream. It looks so light because I'm all of a sudden running out of black ink!!! @%$^&** Okay, Plan B for mom! I'll use the toile.
Here are some others that I had printed out previously. Check out the top left picture. I took a picture of a tile and printed it on the tissue paper. Very cool huh?- didn't realize I was using up the last of my ink!
Next step: Paint some Mod Podge onto the tile- get it right into all of the little crevices.
Very carefully, lay the tissue paper onto the tile, carefully pressing out any air bubbles! Paint another coat of Mod Podge on top of your picture. Start at the center and work out.
See the edge of the paper and how it's a straight line. Using your fingernail just rough that up a little.
I just scraped the edges. This is one of those details that will make your final project look ten times better.
Then, just take your brush and brush it out. It cleans up nicely! Let it dry. If you are impatient use a blow dryer. Don't flip out if it looks all milky- it will eventually dry clear.
The last thing that you want to do is put some felt or some cork on the back.
The point of using tissue paper and not just decorative paper is that the tissue paper just practically dissolves leaving only the image.
It actually looks like it was painted on the tile.
If you can't squeeze this in for Mother's Day, there's always Father's Day or any occasion for that matter. Have fun with it!
Have a great Mother's Day weekend!
