A friend of my daughter's just moved into an apartment in Manhattan. She is a recent college grad and will be working through a two year program at Pace. She decided that she was done with dorm decorating and was looking for a more sophisticated way to decorate her new apartment- basically her bedroom, since the apartment is shared with two others. Like many, she turned to Pinterest and fell in love with the whole refurbish-recycle look. She went on Craigslist and found assorted old chippy architectural pieces like doors, shutters, various shelves and an old window that someone had turned into a mirror. How fun is that? Wouldn't it be fun to be twenty-two again?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="400" src="http://www.atypicaltypea.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Door-headboard-3-500x666.jpg" width="300" />
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
She was inspired by the above photo and I used it back when I did the post <span style="background-color: white;"> </span><a href="http://ispiratodesign.blogspot.com/2012/06/recycled-door-headboards.html" target="_blank">Recycled Door Headboards</a>. Check that out if you would like to see more headboard inspiration. I couldn't wait to tackle the project of refinishing the doors and getting "the look" that she wanted for her new space.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Sv-CKK2FNYs/T-3YuxV5pKI/AAAAAAAAB9M/ldpdDm6UZ_0/s1600/dr1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Sv-CKK2FNYs/T-3YuxV5pKI/AAAAAAAAB9M/ldpdDm6UZ_0/s400/dr1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When I got the doors this is what they looked like. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-odOt0ouLfJE/T-3Y53l3EGI/AAAAAAAAB9U/-K8XxndJHM0/s1600/dr2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-odOt0ouLfJE/T-3Y53l3EGI/AAAAAAAAB9U/-K8XxndJHM0/s640/dr2.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Immediately when I painted on the paint stripper, the first layer of paint started bubbling up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9fGTLW6N4fo/T-3ZC93SBlI/AAAAAAAAB9c/POre_Mx0Ttc/s1600/dr3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9fGTLW6N4fo/T-3ZC93SBlI/AAAAAAAAB9c/POre_Mx0Ttc/s400/dr3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Working a small area at a time, using a 2" putty knife, I just started to scrape off the paint.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rCOqntai9H8/T-3ZNmMYD-I/AAAAAAAAB9k/cos2_Xd3wCY/s1600/dr4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rCOqntai9H8/T-3ZNmMYD-I/AAAAAAAAB9k/cos2_Xd3wCY/s640/dr4.jpg" width="382" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once I was satisfied with one area, I moved onto the next.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6U34XbhajC4/T-3ZW9QkGNI/AAAAAAAAB9s/RYzhZmRYhfg/s1600/dr5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6U34XbhajC4/T-3ZW9QkGNI/AAAAAAAAB9s/RYzhZmRYhfg/s400/dr5.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I poured the stripper into an empty soup can because it evaporates very quickly. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6Vv6zZK8Umw/T-3ZjtzJj6I/AAAAAAAAB94/EVdIuvvP8eQ/s1600/dr6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6Vv6zZK8Umw/T-3ZjtzJj6I/AAAAAAAAB94/EVdIuvvP8eQ/s640/dr6.jpg" width="382" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Every now and then I would stand back to access the entire door -scrape a bit more here and there- until I was satisfied with "the look". Then I cleaned it up good with some mineral spirits and a steel wool pad. After it dried I went back and made sure there were no loose pieces. Chances are it was lead paint so I was sure to wear a mask through the whole process and then finish with a light sealer.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hhxEHD9SkXE/T-3ZvNRz3zI/AAAAAAAAB-A/J3jhDFvihQo/s1600/dr7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hhxEHD9SkXE/T-3ZvNRz3zI/AAAAAAAAB-A/J3jhDFvihQo/s400/dr7.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Onto the second door...same story!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zk1wVovTEpQ/T-3pDscfV4I/AAAAAAAAB-M/IemzXQnX2y8/s1600/IMAG1661.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zk1wVovTEpQ/T-3pDscfV4I/AAAAAAAAB-M/IemzXQnX2y8/s640/IMAG1661.jpg" width="382" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here are the finished doors!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you're wondering why I didn't do them with the door knobs either together or on both on the outside it's because the opposite side of the doors were covered with some sort of contact paper underneath the layers of paint. I guess that was not an uncommon practice years ago and it would have been fine if I wanted to completely strip the doors down...but I needed that deep down layer of paint!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And here are the doors in their new home!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-p9JSiq0aYaY/T-3pHwQKlSI/AAAAAAAAB-s/jxCEDgnnO-0/s400/rm4.jpg" width="300" />
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Don't you just love them? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She and her mom did a great job accessorizing the space. How awesome to have an old fireplace in your room- a great place to display her old window/mirror!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
...AND a view with lots of natural light! She is off to a great start...I can't wait to get down there in a couple of weeks and see it for myself!</div>Ispirato Designhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01868063799720498291noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8295689187964926882.post-86220843329310194502012-06-25T11:33:00.002-07:002012-06-25T11:35:40.575-07:00My New Dough Bowl- That I WON!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So maybe from the title you can discern that I am pretty excited. It's not only that I am now the proud owner of a one of a kind European treasure but the fact that I actually won it, that I actually won anything, just sweetens the deal! </div>

Since I started blogging over a year ago, I've been following the amazing construction of The Enchanted Home- the blog, and literally, an enchanted home! Tina, the owner of both, started a blog where she so generously allowed us readers into her home as it was being constructed, where she aired her design decisions (even asking for input occasionally), where she shares her favorite places, products and a seemingly endless collection of inspiration photos of homes and gardens from around the world. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white;">Today is the last day of school for my kiddie poos-yeah!!! Schools Out For SUMMER!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
All this week my second grader has been bringing home <i>the masterpieces</i>- all of those works of art that have been compiling at school -in the classroom and in the art room. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I recently read an interesting article on organizing all of those works of art and I suppose this would go for writing pieces as well.</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white;">Simply create four piles- one to keep in a memory box, one to frame, one to give away for gifts to the special people in your child's life and one to throw away. I thought it was interesting that the article talked of the importance of having your child in on the decisions, especially the throw away decisions (even if you </span><span style="background-color: white;">secretly</span><span style="background-color: white;"> throw away more than they realize) but it's important to teach them how to let things go and that it's okay and even quite </span><span style="background-color: white;">necessary</span><span style="background-color: white;">. A lesson that I still struggle with sometimes.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">Here are a bunch of good ideas for displaying:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

How was your Father's Day Weekend? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We had a small family BBQ and the weather could not have been better! I made my dad a simple little gift that he seemed to really like- I posted it on my <a href="https://www.facebook.com/IspiratoDesign">Facebook page</a> if you want to check it out. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Today I'm hoping to inspire you with some fabulous interiors that have a little something extra- an amazing pet! I'm not sure if it's because I have neither a cat nor dog and a part of me <i>reeaaallly</i> longs to or if everyone is drawn to these types of photographs. Pet photos are usually adorable but in my opinion they achieve "Art" status when the setting or background is a gorgeous interior!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Let me know what you think!</div>

Don't you just love the beautiful and serene colors of sea glass?
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="sea glass" height="300" src="http://media-cache-ec6.pinterest.com/upload/103864335125731752_Sup6sbLl_f.jpg" width="400" />
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was so excited when my husband and I first discovered it so many years ago while walking along the beach. We quickly realized that we weren't the only ones and within a matter of a few minutes we were in an all out competition with seemingly professional sea glass pickers. We started getting up early because we overheard the professionals talking about how good the picking was and we found ourselves racing them to the beach at sunrise.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Even though I love it, I cringe now when I see bags of it at the craft store and refuse to buy it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have my own little stash and it's special!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anyhow, if you also love the frosty colors of sea glass you may want to try this really, (and I mean really), simple DIY</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zq5bOASp9I0/T9tC6PUliBI/AAAAAAAAB7w/jMVEHEKBBfM/s400/sea+glass+candle+holders.jpg" width="307" />
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
These were clear glass candle holders. I painted them with a mixture of Mod Podge and food coloring. To be honest, I put very little effort into them because I didn't think it was actually going to work. When I first started painting them, they were all streaky and I just wasn't loving them but when they dried they actually looked very pretty and the streaks don't show.<br />

The best part is, when you want to change them- just soak them in water and it all washes off. If you don't want them to be temporary I suppose you could use a sealer.</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Along our front walk we have three rose pillars planted with "Golden Showers" climbing roses. "Golden Showers" is considered a very fragrant, semi-double, yellow climber. It blooms repeatedly throughout the summer and I like it for this particular spot because it tolerates shade very well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1sgHkCe1J5o/T9YOoFR9MJI/AAAAAAAAB7Y/rWZyLiLBSYs/s640/IMAG1609.jpg" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A year ago, after a very cold winter with very little snow cover, the roses on the two outer pillars appeared to die. From experience I knew they might come back if I left them and since I had no intention of immediately buying new ones- I had the time to wait it out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tf5AWNdz6XE/T9YNnrmCpfI/AAAAAAAAB64/r754AdEWre0/s640/IMAG1604.jpg" />
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Just as I hoped, new shoots shot up this spring!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-w3s-9Ej3kRk/T9YN3UxL1MI/AAAAAAAAB7A/KQNb5gxW0g0/s1600/IMAG1605.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-w3s-9Ej3kRk/T9YN3UxL1MI/AAAAAAAAB7A/KQNb5gxW0g0/s640/IMAG1605.jpg" width="382" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And voila! Wait...what is this?!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GOAL8YGulkA/T9YOI_g_A_I/AAAAAAAAB7I/wBPFZKe4Qn8/s1600/IMAG1606.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GOAL8YGulkA/T9YOI_g_A_I/AAAAAAAAB7I/wBPFZKe4Qn8/s640/IMAG1606.jpg" width="382" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As you may have noticed, the shoots came from deep in the ground. The rose literally went back to it's roots (so to speak). "Golden Showers" is a hybrid, descending from rosa "Captain Thomas"- also a yellow rose, and rosa 'Charlote Armstrong"- a Deep Pink Hybrid Tea- AHA! </div>

<br />
I haven't done a Monday Mix in a while. When it comes to mixing fashion and decor, is there a better setting than the closet. While doing my <i>exhaustive</i> research for this post I realized something about myself. I've always coveted those closets with wall to wall, mirror-clad, paneled doors, glass-fronted cubbies, and central islands with big honking chandeliers...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
you know like these:</div>

I recently had the opportunity to draw a cat portrait for a woman in Israel (she won my last pet portrait give away). Her poor Joey has been missing for quite awhile and she thinks of him every day so she sent me an amazing photo of Joey for me to use to draw a portrait from. Elsina is also an artist and has a good eye for that sort of thing. You can check out her blog <a href="http://emsarts.blogspot.com/2012/05/awesome-gift.html">HERE</a> A great portrait starts with a great photo. <span class="s1">When you decide to have a pencil portrait done of your favourite dog, cat or iguana, having an awesome photo becomes absolutely key. A fabulous photo gives the artist a chance to really capture the essence of your pet and create a lifelong keepsake for you. A poor photo? Well that is just asking for disappointment. </span></div>

<span class="s1"> Okay, you don’t actually have to get dirty, but getting right down to kitty’s level is important. The back of a cat isn’t at all interesting or cute. It’s the face you want, so you might even have to lay down to get the best angle. See how the right photo is so much better.</span><br />

Hmmm, how should I start- long time no see? or should I say long time no write...less cliche- more accurate!? What an amazing few weeks! No, we haven't completely finished the kitchen reno- not even close. Free time has not been abundant. Our household is in the thick of baseball season-two boys, three teams- one of the teams takes us all over...NJ, Albany, Buffalo and we love it! Yes, we've been doing lots of traveling and have pity on me, I just returned from NYC where I helped my daughter (my one and only <i>daughter</i>, sniff,sniff) set up her new apartment for the summer. A big, wonderful and exciting step for her! </div>

I was inspired to hop back into posting because last night I was with one of my daughter's friends whose moving into an apartment in Manhatten. She recently purchased a couple of old doors that she wants to use for a headboard. I'm hoping to help her out with this endeavor...for now, here is some inspiration for her and anyone else attempting this project.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Scour antique shows, garage/barn sales for some great finds.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Craigslist is also a great place to find doors for this purpose. I think LR, my daughters friend, picked up three beautiful doors, with hardware, for five dollars each. </div>

So many different looks... Which one appeals to you!?</div>

After a week long, spring break <i>staycation, </i>things are finally getting back to normal around here. The older kids are back to college and the younger ones back to school. I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter weekend- ours was exceptionally nice this year. I probably say that every year but it's just so nice having the family all together! </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I've picked up a couple of jobs over the break, one of them being a kitchen design. The focal point of this particular design is the island. In my recent guest post at West Pear Avenue, I discussed how important it is to consider <i>how you actually</i> <i>live in your kitchen. </i>This particular client explained that her daughter and her daughter's friends hang out around the existing kitchen island all the time and that they all like to cook and prepare food together. That got me to thinking about islands like these:</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img alt="curved kitchen islands with seating" height="400" src="http://www.kitchendecorate.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/curved-kitchen-islands-with-seating.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="395" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.kitchendecorate.net/curved-kitchen-island-units.html">via</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img alt="." height="640" src="http://media-cache1.pinterest.com/upload/99853316707995312_DdzXkuBR_f.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="427" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">via</td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
A second consideration is that a wall between the kitchen and an adjacent sitting room was just removed. Now there is a clear line of sight directly from this sitting room, as well as the front entrance, right into the kitchen. That got me to thinking of islands like these:<br />
<div><br />
</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img alt="curved kitchen island designs" height="266" src="http://www.kitchendecorate.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/curved-kitchen-island-designs.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="400" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.kitchendecorate.net/curved-kitchen-island-units.html">via</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img alt="love this" height="400" src="http://media-cache1.pinterest.com/upload/186406872046829871_RnIR1aya_f.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="400" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/photos/0,,1581515_1284285,00.html">via</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">One last consideration is that a cramped eating area could be eliminated if enough seating could be incorporated into the island or possibly a small, (potentially portable) table could be incorporated.</div><div style="text-align: center;">Something like this:</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img alt="Cool island" height="640" src="http://media-cache3.pinterest.com/upload/16395986113707402_cG3fiLpg_f.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="480" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://bhg.com/">via</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table><div style="text-align: center;"> I wish I had enough room in my own kitchen for any one of these awesome islands. </div><div style="text-align: center;">They definitely would encourage gathering in the kitchen!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><b>Do you have an island and is it the "hot" spot in the kitchen?</b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">PS I've really missed reading all of my blog friend's blogs! I'll be making my way around to see what you've all been up to :) </div>Ispirato Designhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01868063799720498291noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8295689187964926882.post-54470444886368229232012-04-03T03:49:00.000-07:002012-04-03T03:49:42.966-07:00Guest Posting at West Pear Avenue<div style="text-align: center;"><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">Isn't it hard to believe that this weekend is Easter? Every year my mom and sister and I exchange egg ornaments that we have decorated. I usually make an Easter tree out of pussy willow branches to display them but with the unusually warm weather that we had a couple of weeks ago, the pussy willows came and went before I even noticed. I was so mad- it was mid March for crying out loud...that is just unheard of. </div><div style="text-align: center;">The tutorial from last year is <a href="http://ispiratodesign.blogspot.com/2011/04/pussy-willows-rite-of-spring.html">HERE</a>. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j4xuossvtwY/T3oBU-qdxSI/AAAAAAAAB3w/bLq0uBVLb_Q/s1600/IMAG1450.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j4xuossvtwY/T3oBU-qdxSI/AAAAAAAAB3w/bLq0uBVLb_Q/s640/IMAG1450.jpg" width="380" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Seriously, he is not wearing this tie! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">1.) Start with a silk tie and some eggs</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GGR9XH13TZ0/T3oCMvaZXCI/AAAAAAAAB4Y/IE2t9m5orMI/s1600/IMAG1458.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GGR9XH13TZ0/T3oCMvaZXCI/AAAAAAAAB4Y/IE2t9m5orMI/s640/IMAG1458.jpg" width="382" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">2.) Cut the tie into pieces large enough to wrap around the eggs and secure with a piece of string.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8i-rpy6EJd0/T3oBhYf3CpI/AAAAAAAAB34/oUBybfS5lLI/s1600/IMAG1461.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8i-rpy6EJd0/T3oBhYf3CpI/AAAAAAAAB34/oUBybfS5lLI/s320/IMAG1461.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">3.) Wrap a piece of white cotton around the silk covered eggs and secure that with a string. You could use an old t-shirt or pillow case torn into smaller pieces.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DaRu9boYgZU/T3oBrWeWp4I/AAAAAAAAB4A/-x_kp2RU-9k/s1600/IMAG1464.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DaRu9boYgZU/T3oBrWeWp4I/AAAAAAAAB4A/-x_kp2RU-9k/s320/IMAG1464.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">4.) Put the eggs in water (I used about a quart of water and about 3/4 cup white vinegar). </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Bring to a boil and boil for 20 minutes. Since the eggs were hollow they wanted to float. I weighed them down by laying a lid on top of them.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HUGRTQmwvfM/T3oB2CS9Q2I/AAAAAAAAB4I/7eHyg_z4WQ4/s1600/egg1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HUGRTQmwvfM/T3oB2CS9Q2I/AAAAAAAAB4I/7eHyg_z4WQ4/s400/egg1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Then I rinsed the hot eggs under cool tap water and carefully unwrapped them. I really was shocked!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Now I'll just add a ribbon to hang them and voila! I'm still going to try and do the blue and white ones and maybe even the zen doodles but these were just so quick- I can't wait for the kids to get home so we can do more.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">You've got to try these!</div>Ispirato Designhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01868063799720498291noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8295689187964926882.post-15948909066679105492012-03-30T06:22:00.000-07:002012-03-30T06:22:30.855-07:00Modern Vintage Style<div style="text-align: center;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

</tbody></table>Good morning! First, let me start with a cute little story.<br />
My eight year old son picked up a tape measure and was walking around the kitchen measuring things. I heard him say that something was sixteen inches plus tax. I questioned why he said plus tax and he explained that when something cost two dollars you actually have to pay two dollars plus a little bit more. To clarify, I asked him what he thought "plus tax" meant, to which he replied, "plus tax means a little bit more, right?" Isn't that sweet!<br />
I said actually it means too much more!<br />
<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Anyway, in my last post, I alluded to an emerging design trend where "old meets new" or "vintage meets modern" What?! you say-that's not new but, <i>how it's being done </i>is new.<br />
It's more refined, more calculated. It's like shabby chic goes to the big city. More and more I've been noticing vintage furniture being updated and made to look modern either through the use of paint in modern colors or modern fabrics and patterns. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">What do you think of this sofa by Moda-USA?</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

It was a hot one! I think I only was only inside to sleep. I knew this week was going to be chilly so I put off my kitchen remodel work and allowed myself a week of <i>working my butt off</i> pruning, raking, mulching and getting so sunburned that I couldn't sleep at night- when will I ever learn!<br />
<br />
Back to the title of today's post: "Look What's trending Now"<br />
<br />
<h2><span style="color: #073763; font-size: x-large;">Neons </span></h2><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img alt="Metallic Interior Design" src="http://blog.arcadianhomedecor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/5-Metallic-Inspirations-Home-Decor.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" /></td></tr>

</tbody></table>If you are wondering how to change up your decor a bit for spring it's easy! Add a splash of neon color. What I've noticed this year, that is different from previous years, is that the neons are not <i>highlighter marker</i> neon- they are classier than that. They are tangerines and jewel tones like amethyst and turquoise. They are the perfect compliment to the more refined <i>old meets new style</i> that is emerging. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">via</td></tr>

I'm sure you've been overwhelmed by the number of posts that I've been putting up lately (sarcasm!)- no, seriously, it's a beautiful new week, a new day and a new post. I'm actually pretty psyched about this one because it's a REVEAL! Last week - all week, I worked on my German baking cupboard. The same cupboard that was the inspiration and motivating factor for the kitchen layout design. I loved this cupboard the minute I set eyes on it at an antique show right here in Syracuse, NY and knew that I needed to make room for it even if it meant redesigning the kitchen layout- which it did...and so we did!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">BEFORE</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div style="text-align: center;"> </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Here is the before which is actually right after I painted it the first time. I know this will kill all of you wood lovers but when I got it, it was not painted. It was honey-stained pine but a lot of the wood was split and damaged and it was pretty rustic looking. We've lived with it this color for many years and I still love it but with the latest kitchen redesign, the "edgy-er" black and white modern country design it needed a change.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I knew that I wanted it to be black to contrast with the new white base cabinets and to coordinate with the new black granite countertops but I also wanted it to be true to it's age so I decided on a distressed black finish.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Wfel-Tr5WMY/T14Y1seA86I/AAAAAAAAB1A/0xGH-AgGgNk/s1600/IMAG0974.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Wfel-Tr5WMY/T14Y1seA86I/AAAAAAAAB1A/0xGH-AgGgNk/s640/IMAG0974.jpg" width="380" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The first thing I did was paint the interior with the same creamy white C2 (Halo C2-144) paint that I painted the cabinets- creating the perfect backdrop for the mostly deep navy, polish pottery dishes that we use for everyday. As you can see, I sampled two different color black paints on either side (by the drawers).</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EMz6dVHxczs/T14Y7lYrGeI/AAAAAAAAB1I/9JTH5mrI39U/s1600/IMAG1074.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EMz6dVHxczs/T14Y7lYrGeI/AAAAAAAAB1I/9JTH5mrI39U/s640/IMAG1074.jpg" width="382" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The next step was to give the entire exterior a good sanding. Because I was doing a distressed finish, I sanded it right down to the wood along most of the edges. </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CogwVHLkCME/T14ZD9AhxZI/AAAAAAAAB1Q/TRLpoojEOwA/s1600/IMAG1185.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CogwVHLkCME/T14ZD9AhxZI/AAAAAAAAB1Q/TRLpoojEOwA/s400/IMAG1185.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The key is to sand down to the wood just enough to accent the edges, highlight a few flaws in the wood where the paint might <i>naturally</i> be worn down. This part is all by feel- (don't over do it!) - every edge would not be worn down to the wood.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qK30wYPjUVI/T14ZWvU3znI/AAAAAAAAB1g/_E8O47APTfY/s1600/IMAG1194.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qK30wYPjUVI/T14ZWvU3znI/AAAAAAAAB1g/_E8O47APTfY/s640/IMAG1194.jpg" width="382" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I painted it with two coats of black paint (Valspar "Lincoln Cottage Black" 4009-2). Go ahead and paint right over the entire piece- even where you sanded it down to the wood. By sanding first it will be easier to re-sand it and it kind of gave you a preview of what the piece will look like so that you can make adjustments.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-en8kE7kQ4gI/T14ZfjfJ5BI/AAAAAAAAB1o/kobWDejH-oI/s1600/IMAG1195.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-en8kE7kQ4gI/T14ZfjfJ5BI/AAAAAAAAB1o/kobWDejH-oI/s640/IMAG1195.jpg" width="382" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">To paint a piece like this, I like to use a small, high-density foam roller</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">and a nylon brush to lightly brush it out. I also used those for the top coat (water-based polyurethane). </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Cramming- that's what! I went ahead and scheduled a date for the granite countertops to be templated because I felt that it would keep us moving- you know, on track. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Black (with bluish/greenish and some brown)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I decided on a black granite (the one right above). I really wanted a honed slate or a honed absolute black granite but shockingly those are not in my budget. Sooo, I like this last one- it's called peacock and actually doesn't look anything like the picture- the red that you see is actually the reflection of my phone.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">They gave me a larger chunk when I went to visit our slab. It looked much prettier when I saw the entire slab and now I'm in love. I know it's destiny because it's called peacock and guess what- my favorite pattern of Polish pottery dishes that I use are also called "Peacock". It was meant to be :)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img height="238" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HwzdlfqztQ0/T0QFtSBgmrI/AAAAAAAABwY/W17Dfg2eVz0/s400/IMAG0728.jpg" width="400" /> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The contractor (my husbands brother) built the open shelves on either side of the vintage sink. They still need their face frames which I think we will end up doing ourselves and then on a whim I decided to replace the base cabinets. That's what really held us up because they will not measure for the countertop until all cabinets are installed. Saturday night and into Sunday morning & one large bottle of wine later, we got it done. I purchased "in-stock" oak cabinets which I'll paint and glaze and trick out with some trim to give them a more custom look. (A future post!)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img height="238" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JpHJLv1unTk/T0QF22gbGjI/AAAAAAAABwg/ubRUGUwx8XA/s400/IMAG0729.jpg" width="400" /> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Yesterday they came and made the template. I had never seen them do it this way before. They stuck sensors all over the surfaces of the walls and cabinet tops. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img height="238" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AyJ6Srz27qg/T0QF_eyMpSI/AAAAAAAABwo/w_yjmY9F_7w/s400/IMAG0730.jpg" width="400" /> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">They used another instrument that I unfortunately didn't get a picture of but it recorded all of the data from these sensors and will directly transfer the information to the computer that is used at the cutting machine.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Pretty cool- not a lot of room for human error.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I've been painting cabinets all day. The granite is scheduled to be installed next Monday and I want to at least have the cabinets finished before then. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I was going to say I hope your weekend was better than mine but in retrospect, our weekend was kind of fun- the hubster and I work pretty well together!</div>Ispirato Designhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01868063799720498291noreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8295689187964926882.post-68109969007413684702012-02-14T12:31:00.000-08:002012-02-14T12:31:53.735-08:00Happy St. Valentine's Day<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Hi there lovely readers! I made one of those little tassels that I showed you a while back from Living in a Nutshell blog. It's a super simple project made from a champagne cork, decorative paper and ribbon. I was clammering to get this post up over the weekend in case someone was looking for a quick Valentine's day project but instead, my family and I took a spontaneous trip to Buffalo. My daughter's birthday was last Thursday and it was the first time that I didn't see one of my kids on their birthday. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I didn't like that! Not one bit :(</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">So we all met in Buffalo and had dinner. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Mama was much happier after that :)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Don't fret though- you still have time- it is that simple, especially if you already have a champagne cork.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img alt="Aren't these adorable?" height="400" src="http://media-cdn.pinterest.com/upload/186406872046218002_qH7swB3G_f.jpg" width="322" /> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Here is the one from <a href="http://livinginanutshell.com/">livinginanutshell.com</a>. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I like it better than mine because of the ribbon color but my red velvet ribbon makes mine look a bit more Valentines-y. Right?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Vcw_BA42kEI/TzmCAWxX8QI/AAAAAAAABuw/UpV2e6y1Ovo/s1600/proj01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Vcw_BA42kEI/TzmCAWxX8QI/AAAAAAAABuw/UpV2e6y1Ovo/s400/proj01.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">First you need to drill a hole through the cork top so that you can thread a ribbon through for hanging. I used my Dremel but any drill would work. Warning: That part was messy!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Then you need some decorative paper</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N0layZH42JM/TzmB2kX3akI/AAAAAAAABuo/n2eGtijA-RM/s1600/proj.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N0layZH42JM/TzmB2kX3akI/AAAAAAAABuo/n2eGtijA-RM/s400/proj.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">In the original post they used pages from a french book. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I liked the look of text and I have this Italian poem rubber stamp.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pciipcVAwpE/TzmCI_uiDuI/AAAAAAAABu4/7TJsoMp5v-4/s1600/proj02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pciipcVAwpE/TzmCI_uiDuI/AAAAAAAABu4/7TJsoMp5v-4/s400/proj02.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I just stamped all over a large sheet of newsprint paper. Ohh, I just got an idea as I am writing this post. My husband is an investment broker I think it would be really cool to use the stock quotes page from the Wall Street Journal. I have the cork from the bottle of champagne that we drank at our wedding. Won't that be special! He can hang it on the drawer of his bedside table and always think fondly of me- tee hee. I do think he would like it though, I mean, as much as a guy would like that sort of thing. I'll let you know :) </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Anyhoo... back to the project.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-L2idD32xnZ0/TzmCkSZ9e8I/AAAAAAAABvQ/ROQBUnGGbmY/s1600/proj06.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-L2idD32xnZ0/TzmCkSZ9e8I/AAAAAAAABvQ/ROQBUnGGbmY/s320/proj06.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Cut the paper in strips about 14" long. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I did three different widths so that the tassel looks more full.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-r1EBl5RsJw0/TzmCq8Vg7xI/AAAAAAAABvY/yO1KRMOazy0/s1600/proj07.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="188" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-r1EBl5RsJw0/TzmCq8Vg7xI/AAAAAAAABvY/yO1KRMOazy0/s320/proj07.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Cut the strips into fringe, leaving about a half inch at the top.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-T-LvNjReMas/TzmCZU4ECVI/AAAAAAAABvI/ijDZ-dOy-lE/s1600/proj05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-T-LvNjReMas/TzmCZU4ECVI/AAAAAAAABvI/ijDZ-dOy-lE/s320/proj05.jpg" width="191" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Glue the paper around the cork. Cover the edge with ribbon. A hot glue gun is the way to go. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Wasn't that simple. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">One more thing- I think I'll put one of these in my kids lunch tomorrow.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img alt="apple cuteness for kids' lunch on Valentine's Day! </tbody></table><div style="text-align: center;"><b>Kitchen Update: Part Three</b></div><div style="text-align: center;">Over the course of the last two posts and now this one, I've tried to give you a glimpse into how I'm coming up with our kitchen design. I will admit that it's been much harder coming up with a design for my own kitchen than it is for me to design someone else's. I can sound so confident telling a client my ideas but with me as the client- I vacillate between this or that, these or those, I lose sleep and I hate having to consider a budget! </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Maybe I should have started off my kitchen updates with my favorite kitchen inspiration photos, that way you would have known the direction I'm going in, especially since I asked your opinion on pendant lights in my last post. I did mention that my design would be classic and timeless, most likely black and white- I know, I know it's not uncommon but I love it and have always loved it. I see it as the perfect backdrop for my ever changing whims. It's kind of like I'm hard-scaping the kitchen in black and white (ie. cabinets, countertop, etc) and then the soft-scaping (window treatments, table linens and china) will shape the feel of the room as the seasons change, as my mind changes and when the holidays roll around.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">The struggle I had was <i>white with black</i> or <i>black with white</i> or <i>white on white </i>you get the picture. Check out some of my favorite combinations below:</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Allen + Roth Lighting</td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">What do you think of that pendant light? It's one of several that I'm considering for over the counter.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fM1Trwj4COU/TzGorCMrefI/AAAAAAAABto/kZUt2yEDRbY/s1600/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fM1Trwj4COU/TzGorCMrefI/AAAAAAAABto/kZUt2yEDRbY/s640/3.jpg" width="382" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I always regretted not putting pendant lights over this counter as part of the last reno. So when the ceiling came down and to be honest- all most immediately, even when we were in the holy crap look how much water has accumulated up here stage, I was thinking - hmmm, new lighting plan! Always a designer! Just to be sure that I wanted pendant lights, we lived with soda bottles hanging from the ceiling for a few days.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jTAvxb5xhDQ/TzGoyvEosiI/AAAAAAAABtw/We3DssN2nWo/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jTAvxb5xhDQ/TzGoyvEosiI/AAAAAAAABtw/We3DssN2nWo/s640/1.jpg" width="382" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I thought it was important to look at them from every angle.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img alt="for the kitchen" height="400" src="http://media-cdn.pinterest.com/upload/186406872046495126_GFlz2QLH_f.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="400" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Allen + Roth</td></tr>

I hope so. After a week of being quite under the weather (the reason for the absence of posts last week), I had a pretty productive weekend. If you've been following along you know that a few weeks ago, Friday the thirteenth to be exact, we had a water pipe burst in our kitchen ceiling. By the end of that day, we had a good portion of the ceiling down, the wall cabinets off the walls, some wall board and insulation that was soaked was removed and by the end of that weekend we ended up having to pull the base cabinets out. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This week I will be posting exclusively about our kitchen reno. In order for you to get the full flavor of it, I need to give you a little background. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Usually, a kitchen reno is planned over the course of months ...or at least weeks.This was just dumped on us {literally} and like all things that happen that way- it was quite stressful. To back up a little- we did start the kitchen reno a few <i>years</i> back, we completed a good portion of the kitchen back then and we did the work ourselves but there were things, like the cabinets and countertops, that we put back "temporarily"- well, I guess it's time to finish up those things that were never completed. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Here is the original floor plan:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vmJFeeLREAU/TzBCF2QrszI/AAAAAAAABtI/fRbvUPoowV0/s1600/cropped+kitchen.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vmJFeeLREAU/TzBCF2QrszI/AAAAAAAABtI/fRbvUPoowV0/s640/cropped+kitchen.jpg" width="402" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Of all the things I do, space planning is my favorite! I love listening to the requirements that a client has (or would like) and then designing the new space to meet their needs. My husband- not so much! He says most wives change the curtains or paint colors- I always want to move walls!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Let me explain why the walls needed to be moved!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sxZR1es7pDc/TzBHKMu94cI/AAAAAAAABtQ/T4RKEPkaRvQ/s1600/sink.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="386" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sxZR1es7pDc/TzBHKMu94cI/AAAAAAAABtQ/T4RKEPkaRvQ/s400/sink.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: red; font-size: large;">A:</span> We were given a vintage porcelain sink with drainboards on either side but not any old sink- it was the sink from the family camp- the sink where I can still picture my husbands grandmother preparing meals and washing dishes. As silly as it may seem, we love that old sink and really wanted to use it in the kitchen. It was wider than the sink we had so we had to move the dishwasher to the next wall.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="color: red; font-size: large;">B:</span> The desk had to go! It wasn't big enough for homework or paying bills. I was constantly pushing the chair in and basically, it became a catch all for mail, keys and junk! Hated it but the big motivator was that I had purchased an old German baking cupboard (below)! I needed more space. </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ImC_lWojdaY/TSKMppzOfRI/AAAAAAAAAPU/75yNAZNMUQ8/s640/german+cupboard+1.png" /> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Last, but definitely not least!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: red; font-size: large;">C:</span> This is the entry from the mudroom which in real life is the main entry. I didn't like that the line of traffic (a term that refers to where people actually walk) was right into the end of the island. I especially didn't like that it was the focal point from the mudroom aka the main entry. After all, a cook top is not attractive- especially when you are cooking. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">In order to have the kitchen configured this way I had to alter the footprint in the mudroom as well. Here is the original kitchen plan (same as above) but with the adjacent mudroom.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WDD3FlomuNs/TzAweQgB2lI/AAAAAAAABsg/FeBuvkJSkbA/s1600/as+built+rev.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="326" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WDD3FlomuNs/TzAweQgB2lI/AAAAAAAABsg/FeBuvkJSkbA/s400/as+built+rev.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Before</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kp3pSsGWlTk/TzAwlGmuToI/AAAAAAAABso/5S2UcEXefA4/s1600/new+rev.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="325" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kp3pSsGWlTk/TzAwlGmuToI/AAAAAAAABso/5S2UcEXefA4/s400/new+rev.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">After</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I won't get into the mudroom design other than to say that it is a much better space plan. The large, very sunny windows are no longer in the closet (wasn't that crazy) and the space is more of a room rather than a hall. The washer and dryer are exposed but it is worth the trade off and besides I have plans for them- down the road.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Back to the kitchen- here is a close up of the new kitchen layout.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dkW71og_nog/TzBYBEfPuQI/AAAAAAAABtY/59pVqW-vaGI/s1600/new+close+up.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dkW71og_nog/TzBYBEfPuQI/AAAAAAAABtY/59pVqW-vaGI/s640/new+close+up.jpg" width="406" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Now, when you enter, there is a clear traffic flow area with a line of sight which is actually beyond the kitchen to the fireplace in the family room and from the family room, because of the new raised counter (where the stools are) you can't see the kitchen counter tops, cook top, or sometimes mess, which was another priority that I had. Also, there is room for the sink and the German cupboard. I don't have the desk that I didn't want anyway and I lost one 36" base cabinet but it was a trade off that was very worth it. I also designed two little niches into the doorway between the kitchen and the piano room. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">That's it for part one- </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I hope this wasn't too mundane, not a lot of pretty inspiration but that will come with the next post. I really wanted to explain the project from the beginning and give you some insight into the process. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I am very excited about sharing all the pretties so stay tuned!</div>Ispirato Designhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01868063799720498291noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8295689187964926882.post-88339111354642008212012-01-26T12:57:00.000-08:002012-01-26T12:57:03.381-08:00A New Kitchen Planning Website<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

</tbody></table><div style="text-align: center;">In case you haven't stumbled upon this new kitchen planning website, let me introduce you. It's called Cultivate. In my quest to finalize a couple of details for the kitchen, I came across one of Phoebe Howard's kitchens that I had not seen before (and it took me all of three seconds to fall in love with it) and it led me to Cultivate. The website had a certain feel that I liked and sort of recognized. I scrolled down to the bottom and what do you know WSI (Williams-Sonoma Inc.) They sure know how to do things right! The format of the website has that Pottery Barn appearance. </div><br />
