Football begins! Lets go Blue and Orange!

Yes, tonight is the first Syracuse football game of the season but today's post really has nothing to do with football, it's more of a little lesson on contrast. Since SU's colors are blue and orange, and blue and orange just happen to be trending right now, I thought it would be a great example. As you browse down through these images,  I'll give you my take on using color contrast to create bold interiors.

I was thinking about big impact design versus understated design. Understated design is really good design minus the drama.  High impact design is more about drama and a simple method for creating it is to add contrast- specifically color contrast.

Creating big impact through the use of color is easy- Here's one example: pick a dark color for the walls add white furnishings and a few "pops" of color and voila- instant drama! In the photo above, they added symmetry which equals even more impact. Don't forget to add the last layer, the layer that is so often missing...It's what I call the personality layer. I think people struggle with the last layer because the "rules" are less clear and it's personal. Don't be afraid- make it your own!

Why do blue and orange work so well together? The answer is that they are complimentary colors. Complimentary colors are colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel.

Some other examples of complimentary colors are:

Yellow and Purple

...and Red and Green.

If you had to decorate a room primarily in complimentary colors, would you choose:

Blue and Orange,
Red and Green or
Purple and Yellow?

I think you know what I would choose- GO SU!

  1. I think I'm with you. I don't really do red (though I'm getting better about it in recent years) and I love blue. Your pics show how a little pop of orange can look so nice. Some of those blues are just gorgeous.

  2. You rock! I have been so attracted to orange recently and have been looking for a throw and a few pillows to add for fall. So, I'm all about blue and orange (I have some navy in my living room). Amazing images, Michelle! So nautical and fresh looking!

  7. Fabulous post! My husband is an SU alum, and I have always loved orange and blue as a color combination. The way its used in these images is perfection. Fabulous use of pattern and just the right balance between the two colors in each room; the orange pops in all the right places. Go SU!
